“The offer was unexpected for me. Being a football fan, I accepted the offer without thinking. It is a great pleasure for me to be part of the European Championship”

Baku, 23 December – Sputnik. Tale Yuzbayov, Ambassador of Baku Volunteer Programme of the European Football Championship, spoke to Sputnik Azerbaijan about advantages of  volunteering and the fact that several Euro 2020 matches will be hosted by Azerbaijan.

  • Was it unexpected for you to receive an offer to be the Ambassador of Euro 2020 Baku Volunteer Programme? How important is this mission for you?
  • Of course, this offer was unexpected for me. Being a football fan, I accepted the offer without thinking. It is a great pleasure for me to be part of the European Championship.
  • You have had a number of meetings with the youths in recent period, particularly in the educational institutions. Do you sense if the majority of youths are interested in volunteering? What do you usually speak about in the meetings and do you feel if those who lack interest in volunteering become interested following these conversations?
  • There was sufficient interest in volunteering earlier as well. But as far as I know, the number of applicants increased after the meeting. In the meetings, I made jokes, spoke about my years as a student, how I cried when my favourite team was defeated and the potential benefits of volunteering for them. In general, our meetings were interesting.
  • How important is volunteering for such events?
  • Volunteering programmes are organized in the whole world, in most of European countries. Being a volunteering is considered a priority today. If someone has volunteered at some point in the past, this experience is considered a huge asset for him/her when submitting a CV for a job. The person with volunteering experience has more chances to get employed than the one without it. Volunteering has no age limit. You don’t have to be young to volunteer. Even medium-aged people can volunteer and thus contribute to the event hosted by the country.
  • What are top 5 reasons to become a Euro 2020 volunteer?
  • Top 5 reasons for becoming a Euro 2020 volunteer include the following: firstly, Euro 2020 is one of the biggest and most important events hosted by our country; secondly, any football fan wants to become a part of it and can contribute to the event as a volunteer; thirdly, as I said earlier, volunteering is considered a huge asset for future career; fourthly, the volunteers will receive a certificate from UEFA, which is a certificate that comes directly from Europe; fifthly, the volunteers will be provided with a nice Adidas sportswear. So volunteering in Euro 2020 has a lot of benefits.
  •  It would be interesting to know what you think about the fact that Euro 2020  will be the first European Football Championship to be held in 12 different countries.
  • Euro 2020 coincides with the 60th anniversary of the European Championship. So this is a football holiday. This holiday will be held in several countries, not just in one country; the festive atmosphere will be felt in a large area. All of us can feel this holiday and enjoy in it.
  • How will Azerbaijan benefit from hosting several games?
  • Of course, first of all, there will be a tourist inflow. Like many countries, Azerbaijan needs a tourist inflow. Football brings it naturally. Thanks to the quarter-final game in Baku, there will be a mix of cultures in Baku, and our hotels and shops will be filled with tourists - that is, there is some sort of benefit and no harm. We will be in a football holiday. As a Baku resident, it is a great feeling to be in the centre of a football holiday.
  • If you were to invite a neutral fan to see the games to be held in Baku, what would you tell him/her? That is, why should he/she come to Azerbaijan during Euro 2020?
  • Baku is a beautiful city. They can come and enjoy both the historic and modern buildings of Baku. Baku is safe, clean. Azerbaijan has delicious food. I know that the tournament in Baku will be held at a high level. At least it's worth seeing.
  • In the end, if you have any additional comments (for example, addressing to potential local or international volunteers or fans), please go ahead.
  • Thank you for the interview. I have no additions. I wish all of us, as one of the host countries of Euro 2020, good luck in hosting the tournament. I wish all of us to be able to cope with this task and to finish it with success.
